Singapore – Transport System

During the time of boarding the SMRT or the bus, one needs to tap at the entrance and the cards ID is stored. At the time of getting down, the distance is calculated and the amount is cut. This avoids the use of money and save a lot of paper in terms of ticket.

Singapore being one of the Global Cities has an advanced integrated transport system. It mainly comprises of SMRT (Singapore Mass Rapid Transport System), Busses and cabs. Its public transport is used by thousands of workers who prefer to skip their personal vehicles. They certainly have plenty of reasons to do so.

Singapore has a centralized ticket issuing system by the form of ez-link cards. Its an RF Id based technology. The card contains the amount which is recharged. During the time of boarding the SMRT or the bus, one needs to tap at the entrance and the cards ID is stored. At the time of getting down, the distance is calculated and the amount is cut. This avoids the use of money and save a lot of paper in terms of ticket.

This technology if and when adopted in a country like India will do wonders to the resources and revenue of the Government.  it will save a lot in terms of usage of papers by the form of tickets, money, etc.. Also it helps in bringing down the corruption and thus increase the revenue for the government.

Singapore – Changi Airport

The airport is so huge that we hardly feel the presence of millions of people going through it. It has a very good viewing point of the aircraft parked. The entertainment zones are one of the best in the world with free internet, LAN connected games. Xbox, play stations and jamming area.

The moment you step down from the airlines, you wont realize the mammoth size of the airport. Once you start walking through the terminal you go through many escalators and also an Intra Airport train service to go to a different terminal. Then you will come to know how huge this structure is. With a mono rail as a medium to travel in between different terminals, no wonder Changi airport is voted the best airport in the world multiple times.

The interiors are nicely decorated with modern art in some places and live garden around the pillars. It has wind and light deflecting ceilings for energy efficiency. The ground is totally covered with carpet unlike granite or costly marbles in India. Colours chosen blend with the atmosphere.

There is a movie theater too !!Then there is this mall inside the terminal 1 which has the nest of the brands in the world. Right from Gucci to Prada to Mercedes, it has it all. There are many indoor gardens and ponds giving it the earthy feeling.

These are the things one experience as he steps down into Singapore. The kind of impression it leaves lasts for ever. It is truly a marvelous man made structure.

Robert Kearns – Flash of genius

As a flash of genius he remembered his wedding incident and decided to make an intermittent wiper which would wipe in sync with each other with variable speed.

On the eve of his wedding night this gentleman tried to open a bottle of champagne and the cork accidentally hit his right eye which almost made him blind . At that instant he marveled at the way his both eyelids close in sync.  Then later while going in his car with his family he was finding it difficult to drive as it was raining heavily and the wind shields weren’t dispensing the rain droplets properly from the front glass. As a flash of genius he remembered his wedding  incident and decided to make an intermittent wiper which would wipe in sync with each other with variable speed.

He went to his garage in Detroit a used an inductor, capacitor and a variable resistor to make his first prototype.  Now dreaming of manufacturing his invention he gave a demo to Ford. They were impressed with his idea and worked with his for 6 years before dumping his without any contract. Later his idea was introduced in the new models. He was shocked to find this out and thus he embarked upon an epic court battle with a Billion dollar company called Ford for infringing his patents.

This gentleman was Robert Kearns. He was an inventor from the age of 14. He left his teaching profession at Wayne State University in Detroit, had a failed marriage, a nervous breakdown and social isolation in order to pursue this case against Ford and other Auto Giants. In his final years, he drove around in two aging vehicles: a 1978 Ford pickup and a 1965 Chrysler. Neither had intermittent wipers !!

He was a perfect example for how a flash of genius could revolutionize the auto industry. He was the hope for all amateur inventors whose inventions were taken away by big companies. He truly portrayed a fighting human spirit, one which would  not rest until its goals were accomplished irrespective of the hurdles faced.

Life has changed a lot since then. But when ever one sees the visuals of the Bofors firing right in front of the Tiger hills next to the NH1 or watching the below video, one gets to know the true meaning of fear and value for life. As the Jawan says in the interview,  when he faces the enemy its a flash that appears in front of him. It has all the frames of his childhood, love, happiness. But that stays on for a fraction of a second as he realizes its the call for duty and if not at that moment then the very existence of the jawans is of no use. These words give an insight into the thought process of Indian soldiers and every time i see that i get goosebumps.

It was a classic War Journalism with lots of emotions and fearless reporting. It gave some of the most memorable shots of the war. The following video is an extract from the interview which Barkha took during the night of the assault.
